 FHSD Finance Update


School districts across the nation, including Francis Howell, are experiencing severe financial stress as states slash education spending and federal stimulus money that staved off deep classroom cuts and widespread job losses runs out.

In an effort to keep the community apprised of our financial situation, Kevin Supple, CFO will be providing a series of articles that examine the major factors impacting District finances.

On April 13th, Gov. Jay Nixon directed that the $43 million in midyear education cuts be spread out to all Missouri districts proportionately.

Message from Kevin Supple, CFO

The state approved the supplemental budget bill for the current fiscal year, which is $43 million short in basic state aid for schools. This means larger cuts for the Francis Howell School District.

A presentation was made to the Board of Education at the March 11th Board meeting on possible modifications to the 2010 Summer School due to the emerging negative financial news from the state and the impact it will have on FHSD.

Message from Kevin Supple, CFO

News released this week confirms what I have known for some time: the State of Missouri is facing unprecedented financial challenges. The current year’s state budget was developed based on an estimate that revenue this fiscal year would be approximately 4% lower than the prior year. Through the end of February, 2010, actual state revenue is 12.7% lower when compared to the prior year. The downturn, according to the state budget director Linda Lubbering, “means pretty significant rethinking of what state government does.”
