Transition Day Welcomes Sixth and Ninth-Graders to New School Year

Posted on 08/08/2016

The new school year marks the beginning of another chapter for students, especially for sixth and ninth-graders, as they will walk down unknown hallways on their first day of middle and high school. For FHSD students, however, getting used to the new environment is made a little easier during Transition Day. This year students had the chance to get a first look at their new school buildings during FHSD Transition Day on Aug. 4, 2016.

Kandy Worley, principal at Saeger Middle School, said welcoming the new students on Transition Day is always an exciting event. “We opened up the day where all the teachers were outside greeting the kids, and we had the band playing while the buses showed up,” Worley said. “The kids are ready to get back to school and you can see it on their faces. Their eyes are huge and they’re smiling, and we’re just super excited about it.”

Francis Howell North Assistant Principal Erin Steep said Transition Day is fantastic for incoming freshmen to make a connection with the upperclassmen before they start school. “Hopefully, when they come here on their first day, they feel like they have many people that they are comfortable asking their questions,” Steep said.

Incoming freshmen at Francis Howell North were greeted not only by teachers and staff, but also by upperclassmen who served as mentors. Sponsor Kristen Johnson was one of them, and she said Transition Day has been a positive tradition for FHSD students. “Hopefully we’re breaking down some walls and making the freshmen feel comfortable,” Johnson said. “It’s a good foundation for the kids as they come in, so they have a positive feeling about their new school.”

Freshman Jacey Cool certainly was excited for this new chapter to start. "I'm trying out for the volleyball team, so I'm excited,” she said. “I’m also a little nervous, because I'm trying to make new friends, but everyone has been extremely nice."
