Francis Howell doesn’t only have stellar students, but also stellar teachers as well! One of them is Christopher Campbell, who teaches third grade at Central Elementary. Last month he received recognition as one of the Stellar Alumni from the Youth Exploring Science Program (Y.E.S.) at the St. Louis Science Center.

The Y.E.S. program is an initiative developed by the St. Louis Science Center which provides work opportunities for about 250 underprivileged teenagers during their high school career.

The teenagers participate in projects that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) and have the opportunity to learn in an informal and inquiry based environment. Additionally, the program provides students with the chance to gain real life work experience in the form of internships at local universities and research centers.

Campbell joined the program in 2001 while attending Rockwood Summit High School. “My parents signed me up as a great way to gain job skills and keep me busy during the summer,” Campbell said. “You are hired on at 14 years old, paid minimum wage and employed to teach science-related activities and lessons at the science center and throughout St. Louis City schools.”

Campbell graduated from the program in 2005, and after his first year of college he returned to the program to work as a supervisor.

This year, Campbell will start his fourth year as third grade teacher at the Francis Howell School District, a job he says he very much enjoys.

“You can ask anyone at Central Elementary and they will tell you that I absolutely love my job,” Campbell said. “I truly cherish all of the connections and relationships that I am able to build with students around the school. Inspiring students to be excited about coming to school to learn is my favorite part of the job.”

Campbell is currently getting his master’s degree in Applied Educational Psychology at Webster University. The skills he learned as a participant in the Y.E.S. program help chart the way to a successful teaching career. FHSD congratulates Campbell on this well-deserved recognition.
