FHN HOSA and NHS Take Plunge for Special Olympics

Francis Howell North (FHN) High School students and staff recently rallied together to raise money for Special Olympics of Missouri at the Polar Plunge in Maryland Heights, and raised nearly $6,000. They also won the “Golden Plunger Award” for best costumes that day, proving they could help others – and also look good doing it.

The FHN Health Occupations Services Association (HOSA) chapter was joined by the school’s National Honor Society (NHS) on Feb. 27, taking the plunge into some icy cold water in exchange for donations to the Special Olympics. FHN Teacher of the Year, Matthew Riffee, whose work is showcased in the FHSD's Biomedical Sciences Class video, did more than supervise the event; Riffee dove right in with the students for the great cause.

The FHN team was the highest fundraising high school team, with 41 members on the team. Of those members, 27 students and Riffee took the plunge into the icy cold water.

“Our team theme was Disney princesses,” Riffee said. The team dressed up in costumes inspired by characters from Disney movies, such as Cinderella and Riffee’s costume, Snow White. The teacher humorously clarified, “It wasn’t necessarily my choice, but it was fun.” Riffee alone raised over $1,000, and took the plunge not once, but twice.

The Polar Plunge is a chance for people like Riffee and these valiant students to showcase their bravery – as they support local Special Olympics athletes by walking running, or crawling into frigid winter waters. All the proceeds gained by these adventurous folks go to the Special Olympics Missouri’s program of sports training and competition for kids and adults with intellectual disabilities, which occur throughout the entire year. The Polar Plunge is a project of the Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics Missouri. Maryland Heights Police Department, Hazelwood Police Department, and St. Louis County Park Rangers are proud to host the event.
