Eagle’s Wings Provides Warm Coats and Hearts at Central Elementary

As winter approaches and the cold weather moves in, students put on their coats and gloves as they head to school and go outside during recess. Central Elementary invited Eagle’s Wings to help provide clothes to keep students warm, and also ended up warming the hearts of those around them.

Eagle’s Wings is a non-profit organization that serves children in need by providing brand new clothes and shoes. This year alone, the organization has provided over 230 students with new clothes and a confidence boost. Eagle’s Wings believes that by outfitting kids with new clothes and footwear, they are promoting a good work ethic at school and providing a platform for developing new relationships with classmates.

The group got their start after participating in a charity event in 2015. “They adopted some families at Christmas time and on the child’s list was underwear, very basic stuff,” said Audrey Ryan, President of Eagle’s Wings. “From there it was decided these kids probably need help all year.”

“We have been exclusively in the Orchard Farm School District, until now,” said Executive Board member Heather Box. “We are very excited to be expanding into Francis Howell. Our goal is to eventually grow to serve more schools in FHSD and expand to more districts in St. Charles County.” The school counselors, who are the most familiar with the needy families at the school, identified the student recipients.

Central Elementary had 24 students who got to go shopping at the “boutique.” Each shopper left with three brand new outfits (including shirts, pants, socks, and underwear), a pair of shoes, a winter coat, a hat, and a pair of gloves. Given the freedom to pick their own items, boys and girls had big smiles after finding the perfect set of purple pajamas, the softest pair of gloves, or Batman boxers. “We’ve had a girl take a whole hour,” said Ryan. “She probably tried on every pair of shoes in her size!”

Sarah, a second grader at Central, took her time selecting the perfect items. She wanted everything to match and looked forward to picking out a new pair of shoes. “It’s kind of difficult to pick my favorite thing I got because all of them are my most favorite,” she said. Sarah left the boutique wearing her white and blue tennis shoes, excited to show them off in gym class.

Eagle’s Wings purchases the clothing they distribute. Since their inception, the organization has been fortunate to create partnerships with business to obtain the best bargains. “We’re constantly trying to figure out where are the best deals in town for us,” said Ryan. In two years, Eagle’s Wings has provided 546 shirts, 381 pairs of shorts, 171 pairs of pants, 58 coats, 185 pairs of shoes, and countless smiles.

Eagle’s Wings is a 501(c)(3) charity staffed entirely by volunteers. They accept donations through Amazon Smile or PayPal. More information about donating and volunteer opportunities are available on the Eagle’s Wings website
