Make-A-Wish Assembly

Since the beginning of May, Hollenbeck Middle School has been striving to raise money for Henry, a 7-year old Francis Howell School District student who is battling leukemia, to help make his wish of going on a Nickelodeon cruise come true. At a school-wide assembly on May 17, principals announced that the Hollenbeck community exceeded their goal of $5,000 and raised $7,804.35.

Exceeding their goal of $5,000 allowed Hollenbeck to grant not only Henry’s wish, but help John Weldon Elementary school achieve their Make-A-Wish fundraising goal. The generosity of the Hollenbeck community helped grant two wishes in one afternoon.

The school celebrated their accomplishment during the assembly with music from the school band, a guest appearance from the St. Louis Cardinal’s Fredbird, and a visit from Henry.

As incentives for fundraising, two Hollenbeck teachers made special agreements with students. Mr. Chris Purcell agreed to not only eat the hottest chicken wings he could find, but also allow students to paint his finger nails. Mr. Marcelo Menchaca received a special hair cut, as students creatively shaved his head. Additionally, principals Mr. Woody Borgschulte and Ms. Molly Hamer camped out on the roof over night and greeted students from the roof as they arrived for school Friday morning.

Congratulations to the Hollenbeck community for reaching their goal, but also for showing great generosity and compassion.
