Firecrackers Program
Referral for Spectra

During Firecrackers students are observed and tested to for gifted behaviors. This gathered information determines referral to the Spectra program. (Not ALL Firecrackers students are referred for Spectra.) Kindergarten students may be referred for the gifted program any time after the first quarter in kindergarten and they are 6 years old. The child can NOT be screened for the program until they are six years old. The kindergarten student must go through the same process and test as all of the children in the district. All students in the district may be screened twice in a two-year period then they may not be screened again for three years. Since many students at this age do not have test maturity, lack the development in some test taking skills such as visual motor dexterity the kindergarten referral and screening will not count as one of the screenings. As long as the child was referred in kindergarten, they may be referred for screening in first grade and again in 2nd grade or a second time in another grade. The first screening after kindergarten counts as their first screening.
