SEGA Program
Program Description
The exceptionally gifted student possess unique
potential and needs which can only be addressed through modification of
the regular curriculum. The goal of the SEGA program is to identify and
nurture potential through the development of specialized curriculum
offerings modified and adapted to meet the unique learning styles,
learning rates, interests, abilities and needs of the exceptionally
gifted learner. The SEGA program follows the curriculum objectives
approved by the Francis Howell School District in all of the core
academic areas. The SEGA program removes the ceiling at each grade
level, which allows for acceleration opportunities into the next
learning level.
Elementary:
The SEGA program is open to any student entering second
through fifth grade who meets the qualifications for the program. The
SEGA program utilizes a centralized model housed in an elementary
school. The program provides a full time self-contained program at the
elementary level. The students will attend the program everyday for all
core academic areas. They will attend lunch, recess, and special classes
with their grade level peers. Grade level curricula will be covered in
more of an individually accelerated pace than possible in the regular
classroom. After the student completes a grade
level curriculum area the student may advance to the next grade level.
As SEGA students become advanced in certain subjects they may attend
middle school classes for instruction. SEGA students will attend Spectra
as part of their curricula. Opportunities for individual exploration and
research within a particular area of study will be provided for every
SEGA student. Group counseling will be made available to the SEGA
students.
Middle School:
At the middle school level the program provides
self-contained classes for Communication Arts and Social Studies. The
middle school SEGA program is a concept based interdisciplinary program.
SEGA students will be tested for appropriate math placement. When the
middle school curricula is completed selected high school curricula will
be made available at the high school with the recommendation of the SEGA
facilitator. The SEGA student will receive electives with his/her grade
level peers.
High School:
There is no formal SEGA program at the high school
level. SEGA students are encouraged to take a minimum of three honor’s
classes to be considered a SEGA student at the high school level. The
SEGA students may continue to attend Central High School. The Spectra
facilitator and guidance counselor will help to guide the SEGA students
to meet their cognitive and affective needs both academically and
socially. Dual enrollment may be an option on an individual basis. The
students will be individually scheduled in honor’s classes to more
appropriately meet their individual needs.
