SEGA Program
Philosophy
Roedell (1984) states “that highly
gifted children are more susceptible to some types of developmental
difficulties than are moderately gifted or average children. Areas of
vulnerability include uneven development, perfectionism, adult
expectations, intense sensitivity, self-definition, alienation,
inappropriate environments and role conflicts. (Roeper Review,
“Vulnerability of High Gifted Children”) The
aim of this program is to provide a challenging enriched curriculum with
academic acceleration for the exceptionally gifted learner. The Francis
Howell School District recognizes that these students require an
academic curriculum, educational experiences, and attention to affective
needs above and beyond that of the regular gifted program. Participation
in the SEGA program allows students to achieve at a level commensurate
with their abilities and interests while integrating within an
appropriate peer group. National research indicates that the
exceptionally gifted child is often at risk.
