The change from middle school to high school is a pivotal point in students’ lives. We know that failure in 9th grade is highly predictive of whether a student will graduate from high school. Research shows that students who feel more connected to school feel more motivated, have skills to manage challenges, have better attendance, less behavior problems, and are more likely to graduate. The Running Start Program assists incoming 9th graders with self-assessment, goal-setting and the development of self-regulation and self-management capacities through educational, social and organizational/management skills.
The staff help students understand the educational and life changes that happen from middle school to high school and help students prepare for the challenges they are likely to encounter in 9th grade and later in high school. With the staff’s proactive post-secondary planning guidance, teenagers learn how to set goals, pursue those goals and judge consequences. The administration at each middle school reviews data that indicates a student might be a good candidate for the program (attendance, grades, assessment scores and behavior). With teachers and counselors, each school submits a suggested invitation list to the summer school office, and these students are invited to participate in the Running Start program.
