Going Green

The Francis Howell School District (FHSD) is committed to modeling environmental stewardship, wisely managing the use of natural resources, and supporting conservation. Each year, FHSD increases its effort to find ecological solutions to ongoing operations and day-to-day practices.

We strive to:

  • Reduce the use of energy, water, and other natural resources.
  • Encourage waste reduction, reuse, and recycling whenever possible.
  • Educate students, teachers, administrators, and staff about the importance of conservation and environmental stewardship.
  • Provide the resources and support to help schools and other District facilities "green" their practices.

District-Wide Sustainability Efforts

Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • Staff and students are encouraged to make double-sided copies and print jobs whenever possible
  • Use electronic means of communication whenever possible and discourage the printing of e-mails
  • The District has implemented a single stream recycling program

Energy Conservation

  • 75% of building mechanical systems are automated to save energy when unoccupied
  • Staff are encouraged to turn on the energy save mode on their computer after 15 minutes
  • Copiers are either shut down or go into energy saving mode at the end of the day


  • Classroom lights are turned off when a room is not occupied for more than twenty minutes and at the end of the day
  • Schools utilize natural light in hallways and foyers where possible
  • Replacing light bulbs with energy efficient T8 bulbs

Green Cleaning

  • Keep walk ways and parking areas clean and swept
  • Use trash cans at entrances to reduce litter in halls
  • Ban use of cleaning chemicals brought from home
  • Utilize green cleaning products
  • Damp mop or auto-scrub floors frequently to reduce indoor air contaminants

 Indoor Air Quality Enhancements

  • Performing proactive indoor air quality inspections and responding to indoor air quality complaints quickly and efficiently
  • Implementing a green cleaning program in nearly all District schools

School Food Service

  • Schools utilize re-useable plastic lunch trays and baskets
  • Vacant freezers and refrigerators are turned off during breaks
  • Electronic defrost timers for walk-in freezers


  • Watering trees and grass are kept to a minimum
  • Performance and practice fields are watered on an as needed basis to maintain fields
  • Fallen tree limbs are ground into mulch which is utilized at our schools
