Vacation Station is "Moving Forward"

A dedicated group of FHSD Vacation Station students showed determination throughout the summer months and trained hard for the running program “Moving Forward.” Moving Forward celebrated its fourth annual 5k race on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at the Francis Howell North running track.

The program was founded four years ago by Vacation Station program coordinators Sarah Pipes, Rebecca Kendall, and Kelly Yacovelli, with the goal of keeping Vacation Station kids moving during the summer months.

“Our mantra is as long as you’re moving forward, you’re doing great,” said Kendall.

Students met two to three times a week for running and character building activities over an eight to nine-week period, with the big 5k race marking the end of the training time.

The event drew over 70 participants, along with 50 or more running partners and over 30 volunteers including Vacation Station staff, teachers, parents and administrators according to Kendall.

“They had worked hard all summer towards their goal of finishing the 5k and they did it,” she said.

“Every year on race day, Sarah, Kelly and I are reminded of why we do this,” Kendall said. “Seeing children’s faces as they cross the finish line and get their medal, so proud of their accomplishments is our favorite part.”
