FHSD Food Truck

Food TruckIt's a food truck. It's a classroom. It’s a learning opportunity! The Francis Howell School District has partnered with Sodexo, our food service provider, to launch a food truck that will be an extension of the District’s culinary arts curriculum. The truck was purchased with funds provided by Sodexo. As part of the District’s contract with Sodexo, the company makes certain capital investments in FHSD’s food service program, such as the food truck.

The food truck, Food for Thought, will be operated by trained Sodexo personnel; and on occasion you might see some of our FHSD high school culinary arts students as we all students from clubs and organizations participating in the operations. The Food Truck has a variety of menu items, some originally designed by FHSD students. As an instructional tool the food truck is a full restaurant on wheels, offering students experience interacting with customers, cooking a wide array of cuisines, and learning necessary restaurant skills such as food preparation, sanitation, and daily operations. It is an opportunity to provide our students with real-world experience and career training. The idea to purchase and incorporate the food truck into the culinary curriculum was the genesis for the theme of last year’s FHSD Iron Chef Culinary Throwdown, Food Truck Food. For the competition, students had to create recipes designed to be cooked in and served from a real food truck.

Not only can the Food for Thought food truck be used as an instructional too but it can also serve as a means of celebrating students and staff. Classes can receive reimbursable meals from the food truck, Clubs/Boosters/PTOs can use it for fundraisers, it can be available for after-school and Saturday events and to celebrate adult groups.
