FHSD’s School Nutrition Employees Wear Aprons In Lieu of Capes

School Nutrition employees play an active role in the school day for most students. Preparing well-balanced, nutritious meals that meet strict guidelines isn’t easy. But these individuals manage to do that every day, and sometimes twice a day! Francis Howell School District celebrates School Nutrition Employee Week May 6 - 10, 2019. FHSD thanks everyone who dons an apron instead of a cape to make a difference in the cafeteria.

In partnership with Sodexo, the District’s food service provider, more than 50,000 lunches are served in FHSD schools each week. These meals help promote good nutrition habits early on and strive to keep interesting and tasty choices available. Sodexo provides students with quality food, as well as nutritional knowledge, skills, and values needed for a healthy mind and body.

Balancing several local, state, and federal regulations, FHSD’s nutrition employees provide healthy meals with a smile. Federal nutrition standards ensure that every school lunch offers students a well-balanced meal, unlimited fruits and vegetables, and multiple entree choices. School meals must also meet limits on calories, sodium, and unhealthy fats. “The National School Lunch Program ensures each of the 30 million school lunches served daily adheres to nutritional guidelines for calories, fat, and meal components like grains, protein, milk, fruit, and vegetables,” said Sodexo Registered Dietician Marilyn Colvin. “Here at Francis Howell, the food service department strives to provide healthy options, while still offering student favorites.”

This week encourage your student to say thank you to the individuals who prepare and serve school lunches. These nutritious meals help ensure students are successful both in and out of the classroom.
