Castlio Elementary SEGA teacher Tracy Branstetter and Independence Elementary Spectra teacher Maggie Henke have both been awarded grants from the Gifted Support Network (GSN). The GSN educator grant was created to provide teachers with resources to facilitate enrichment for high-ability students. This enrichment can include anything from purchasing classroom supplies for a specific project to activities for students to work on outside of the classroom. The grant is open to all educators in the St. Louis metro area who work with gifted or high-ability students (and is not limited only to educators in gifted education programs).

Tracy Branstetter was awarded a grant in the amount of $200 to help provide books for the SEGA program for literary discussions. The books will serve exceptionally gifted students in grades 2-5 at Castlio, but can also be used by up to 15 other teachers and their students. Many regular classroom teachers face challenges finding enough high-level books for their students so this will provide an opportunity to introduce new books into several different classrooms.

Maggie Henke was awarded a grant in the amount of $150 for a Breakout EDU kit for Spectra students at Independence. The Breakout EDU kit is a collection of ressetable locks, boxes, and immersive learning games that promote critical and creative thinking skills. This kit will allow collaboration with other teachers to offer enrichment activities for students who have mastered their current teaching topic. It is simple to implement, but powerful in engaging student learning.

Both Branstetter and Henke submitted out-of-the-box ideas targeted at enriching the learning experience of gifted students in a creative way. Their grant applications demonstrated that they are passionate about serving their students and excited about providing them with opportunities for higher learning.
