Superintendent Message - September 4, 2020

September 4, 2020

Dear FHSD families:

Well, here we are. We made it through the first week of a new school year!

I know I speak for all of our teachers and staff when I tell you how great it is to see students back in our buildings and on screens across the District.

We emerge from Week 1 with many points of pride. Our in-person students are quickly adjusting to their new normal: wearing masks at school, sitting in assigned seats, and maintaining social distance. Our virtual learners are figuring out Canvas and Google Classroom, and becoming masters of ZOOM. Students at all levels are already learning and growing – and dare I say, having fun!

I also want to acknowledge the work you’re doing at home to support our efforts.

I’ve heard many reports of parents keeping their children home this week if they were even the slightest bit sick. I want to extend my thanks to all who made that responsible decision. I can tell you it absolutely matters.

As I’ve said before, our District is not immune to COVID-19. This week, we learned of two positive cases among our more than 16,000 students. In both cases, the outcome of our contact tracing process was as expected. There were limited exposures requiring precautionary quarantines – proof that our health and safety protocols are working.

But let’s not get comfortable. We want to continue seeing your students at school in the coming weeks and months.

As we head into the holiday weekend, please remember that what happens outside of school has an impact in our buildings. Be mindful of large crowds, especially indoors where social distancing may be difficult. Remember to wash your hands often, and wear a mask or face covering when around others.

I’m so proud of our students and staff for a successful first week back to school, and I’m grateful to our families who continue to reinforce the District’s health and safety protocols. Together, we can make this work.
