Francis Howell’s Barnwell Middle School Awarded $12,000+ Technology Engineering Grant

Barnwell Middle School in the Francis Howell School District will be awarded more than $12,000 in training and supplies as part of the 2022 Technology and Engineering Grant Award from the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).

The grant will be used to fund Project Lead the Way (PLTW) efforts in the school through trainings, tablets, robotics gear and more.

Project Lead the Way Gateway is a nationally recognized curriculum that directly links to the high school PLTW courses offered in Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Computer Science.

“A student who takes the Gateway courses will be introduced to those three career fields in an engaging, hands-on, and realistic way,” said Kara Dalton, FHSD practical arts content leader. “Students will have the opportunity to solve medical mysteries in “Medical Detectives”, develop their own computer applications in “App Creators,” and build and program VEX robots in the “Automation and Robotics” course. This Technology and Engineering Grant will enable us to purchase equipment and pay for the robust training for teachers to become PLTW-certified instructors.”

This grant comes in addition to Barnwell Middle School’s $20,000 Project Lead the Way Grant, announced earlier this year. The District’s other school buildings will have the opportunity to apply for the grant in future years.
