Community EdThe Francis Howell School District launched a Community Education Program with the purpose of enriching the lives of FHSD citizens by providing quality, affordable educational opportunities and activities for the adults in our community.

The Community Education Program is paid for by participant registration fees.

Country Heat Dance Class
DATES: January 8, 10, 17, 22, 24, 29, 31/ February 7, 12, 14, 21, 26
TIME: 6:30 - 7:30 PM
LOCATION: Harvest Ridge Elementary Cafeteria
COST: $38.00 per participant

Step right into this easy-to-follow, completely exhilarating, country dance-inspired workout! No complicated moves. No memorizing routines. Just simply follow along to enjoy the low-impact, high-energy dance class set to the hottest country hits. You’ll have so much fun moving, stepping, clapping, stomping, and laughing, you’ll forget you’re burning mega calories and toning your body from head to toe!

PILOXING® is a non-stop cardio fusion of standing Pilates, boxing, and dance that will push you past your limits! It incorporates cutting-edge research and fitness techniques to burn maximum calories, build lean muscle, and increase stamina. The 60-minute program uniquely blends the power, speed, and agility of boxing with the targeted sculpting and flexibility of Pilates. This is a barefoot class (flexible soled cross-training shoes optional).  These techniques are also supplemented by the use of weighted gloves (optional), further toning the arms and maximizing cardiovascular health. Add to that fun dance moves and you have a muscle- toning, fat-burning workout that will make you feel physically and mentally empowered! 


Drawing for Beginners
DATES: Jan. 10, 17, 24, 31
TIME: 6:00 – 8:00 PM
LOCATION: Francis Howell Central High School, Room 243
COST: $40 (includes cost of art supplies) 

Have you ever said "I can't draw a straight line!" or “I can't even draw a stick figure!", then this is the class for you. Come join the fun and learn to draw. We will explore various drawing media and basic drawing techniques to introduce you to your, yet undiscovered, abilities to draw.

Week One: Holding and Controlling the pencil & The Power of Line (Fun with doodling)
Week Two: How to make 2D look 3D (The illusion of depth with value)
Week Three: Drawing from Observation (A Very Sexy Pepper still-life)
Week Four: Putting it all together. (Completing our Sexy Pepper drawings, class critique, and celebrations.)

Spanish 101

DATES: Jan. 18, 25/  Feb. 1, 8, 15, 22/  March 1, 8, 15, 22
TIME: 6:00 - 8:00 PM
LOCATION: Saeger Middle School and Francis Howell Central
COST: $65.00 

The FHSD Spanish 101 course will cover the basics of the Spanish language with a particular focus on the actual implementation of the language within the four main areas of language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.  Vocabulary content covered will include: education, family, hobbies, vacations, shopping, daily routine, and food. At the end of the session, participants will have experienced all of what a Spanish 1 student does in the FHSD, but in 10 weeks.

Home Buying 101 – January Class

Beginning Sign Language
DATES: Tuesdays Feb. 6 - April 3*

LOCATION: Saeger Middle School Library

This course will explore basic, everyday signs. Participants will learn signs for a variety of topics including the alphabet and commonly used words and phrases. Participants will have the opportunity to practice both expressive and receptive sign language skills throughout the course. The course will also briefly touch on some of the reasons why we would want/need to learn to sign, some general tips and guidelines relating to disability sensitivity and etiquette, and resources for ongoing learning/sign language instruction.

Script Your Family's Future - Why You Need an Estate Plan
DATES: Feb. 22
TIME: 6:30 - 8:00 PM
LOCATION: FHSD Admin Building Board Room

This class will give you a deeper understanding of a wide range of estate planning and estate administration issues, and help you make the best decisions for you and your loved ones. You will learn how various estate planning documents (such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and advance health care directives) work together to effectuate your wishes before and after death.

Practical Parent Talk: Raising Responsible, Caring, and Confident Kids
DATES: March 13 and 20                  OR                  April 16 and 23

Practical Parent Talk: Responsible, Caring, and Confident Kids is a comprehensive class featuring The Parent Talk System developed by master educator and author, Chick Moorman. The System is a style of communicating with children ages 2-18 that creates emotionally healthy relationships. Parents will learn a set of highly effective verbal strategies to:

  1. Eliminate their child’s negative, bothersome, unwanted or inappropriate behaviors
  2. Increase their child's cooperation and decrease power struggles
  3. Teach responsibility and hold their children accountable for their behavior
  4. Build self-confidence and healthy self-esteem in their children
  5. Effectively and respectfully express frustration and other strong emotions


Financial Retirement Planning

A secure, comfortable retirement is every worker’s dream. And now because we’re living longer, healthier lives, we can expect to spend more time in retirement than our parents and grandparents did. Achieving the dream of a secure comfortable retirement is much easier when you manage your finances and plan your retirement. Learn the essentials of Financial Retirement Planning:

  • Understand the advantages of backing insurance and the retirement brokerage industry
  • Understand the purpose of your money, e.g. liquid dollars, income planning, savings/investment, legacy methods
  • Learn how to prevent outliving your money
