The Francis Howell School District Summer School Programs serves students entering grades K-12.  The programs include both remedial and enrichment classes, and there is no cost to attend any of the programs.  Summer school is fully funded through average daily attendance money from the state of Missouri which makes it possible for the district to offer these programs.

ELEMENTARY SUMMER SUCCESS PROGRAM

The Elementary Summer Success Program focuses on improving both reading and mathematics achievement. The program will consist of classroom instruction focused on improving the reading level of students, and targeted reading interventions for small groups and individual students provided by reading intervention teachers. Grade level math lessons are provided in identified District standards for all students. Art, music, and physical education instruction are used to support student interest. Pre- and post-test reading assessments are used to measure students needs and growth.

The Middle School Summer Success Program provides targeted interventions in reading or mathematics to students in need of reading or mathematics assistance.  Students will attend two blocks of intervention, and two blocks of elective choices each day.  It is worth noting that students whose selection of electives during the school year is limited will have the opportunity to enroll in elective classes during the summer program.  Elective choices available include:  Art, World Cultures and Languages, Music, Engineering by Design, Production Technology, and Family & Consumer Science. Students are invited to participate in this program based on academic performance throughout the previous school year.

The High School Credit Advancement Program allows students who have completed grades 8 – 11 the opportunity to earn ½ or 1 credit towards graduation requirements.  Courses offered include:  Personal Finance (Online), Health (Online), Weightlifting, Team Sports, Introduction to Computer Applications, and ACT Prep.

The Early Warning System Summer Success Class provides students a head start on their upcoming freshman year.  Some entering high school students have a difficult time transitioning from middle school to high school.  Topics covered in this program include how to prepare for the pace of high school, getting involved in extra-curricular activities, and how to avoid the pitfalls that may freshmen experience during their time in high school. Students are invited to attend this program based on attendance, grades, and discipline throughout middle school.

The Elementary STEAM Summer Programs are 5-days each that blend together the areas of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.  Each day will start with work on robotics.  There is a focus throughout the program on creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.

The Middle School STEM Summer Programs are 5-days each that blend together the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.  Students will be engaged in hands-on activities that are interactive focusing on creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication.

The Middle School APP Camp Summer Programs are 5-days each where students learn to create and market a mobile app.  APP Camp will consist of brainstorming a mobile application from idea to market, sketching out and storyboarding an application idea, introducing programming languages to students, working on developing applications with assistance and guidance, and developing a marketing plan and making a presentation pitching the app on the last day of the program.

The Middle School Biomedical Science Camp will consist of investigating how a subject died and performing tasks relating to finding a diagnosis. Activities will include gel electrophoresis, blood typing, walking a crime scene, and DNA extraction.

The Kindergarten Summer Success Program is intended to help incoming kindergarten students transition to their new school. Students will learn daily routines and procedures, and become familiar with their school and teachers. Teachers and administrators will have the opportunity to observe students interacting with one another, which will help in planning for the coming school year. The Board of Education will be updated with each elementary school's dates and times once teacher schedules have been finalized.

The Central Elementary School Enrichment Program will consist of three different summer clubs (Author Study Book Club, Maker Space Club, and Coding Club). Opportunities to check-out library books will be provided.

This program will only be offered to Central Elementary School students. The dates for the program will not overlap with the Elementary Summer School Success program.

The High School Advanced Placement Prep Camp is intended for students who plan to take a first Advanced Placement course during the 2018-19 school year. Students will learn note taking strategies, college-level writing skills, and coping skills for engaging in highly rigorous coursework.
