During the week of Feb. 5-9, 2018, the Francis Howell School District is hosting its third annual “We Love to Code” event.
Knowing that the future workforce will include an increasing number of jobs in the areas of programming and computer science, the District has established this week as an opportunity for students of all ages to learn to code. Buildings will have organized activities to provide students opportunities to learn about computer science, as well as to learn to write lines of code.  

Through the experience of programming and coding, students are engaged in problem-solving and logical thinking, which encourages critical thinking,” said Chief Academic Officer Nicole Whitesell. “These skills are necessary for a growing workforce centered around computer science.”

The Learning Commons and classrooms across the District will provide opportunities for students to take part in a variety of coding activities during the We Love to Code week. These coding activities are designed to demystify coding, to show that anyone can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science.

This year’s We Love to Code week will include robotics provided by a generous grant from MasterCard. Elementary and middle school students will have the opportunity to build and program Lego Robotics, while high school students will participate in coding activities with Spheros, a spherical robot that students learn to code and program. All schools also have Bits Box program books, which teach students how to build entertaining apps with line coding.

Parents are encouraged to bring coding home by participating in computer-driven or “unplugged” activities with their children. Parents do not need any coding experience to participate with their children. For links to coding activities, please visit the We Love to Code list of coding sites.
