FHSD Celebrates Veterans Day, Nov. 11

The Francis Howell School District joins the rest of the nation to honor those who have served on Veterans Day, Nov. 11. In the week leading up to Veterans Day, FHSD schools will celebrate these heroes with tributes, activities, and various community events. A list of activities across the district can be found below.

Becky-David: Students are working on special decorations and songs in music and art classes for Becky-David’s Thank a Veteran event on Nov. 10. The students will wear patriotic attire and parade in front of our veterans one grade level at a time, holding signs made in art. After the parade and presentation, veterans will have a chance to visit with the students that invited them and have a refreshment.

Castlio: Castlio Elementary fifth graders host a performance of “A Salute to Our Veterans” on Nov. 9. Students are holding two separate performances at 2:10 and 7:00 PM for friends and family.

Central: A Wall of Honor will be available to view within the building. Central students are encouraged to share those in their family who have or are still serving on the wall. Central is participating in Honor Flight. The student newscast is featuring a special edition dedicated to veterans that all classrooms will view and will be available for family members through the website.

Daniel Boone: Daniel Boone Elementary will be hosting a light breakfast for Veterans Day, followed by an all school assembly at 9:30 AM. Coffee, donuts, and fruit are available for Veterans in the cafeteria.

Fairmount Elementary: This year, Fairmount Elementary will have a Veterans Day Dinner on Nov. 8. Veterans and their Fairmount families are welcome to attend the dinner, from 5:30-6:30 PM and 7:00-8:00 PM. Tickets to the dinner are $3.00 per person, but Veterans are free. Fairmount families are welcome to submit photographs of their veteran with a little information. The school is using the photographs and mementos in a Wall of Heroes display.

Harvest Ridge: On Nov. 10 at 9:30 AM, Harvest Ridge is holding their annual Veterans Day assembly. The entire school will attend the event, which features a special guest speaker, Boy Scout representation, a performance by the After Hours band, and recognition of veterans in attendance. During the donation of funds to Honor flight, a special video will air. Veterans and their guests will be provided a lunch. The school will feature artwork by all class levels.

Henderson: Henderson Elementary will be hosting a pancake breakfast on Nov. 10 at 8:15 AM. The choir will sing patriotic songs and veterans will be encouraged to visit the classrooms.

Independence: Independence families are encouraged to attend a free Veterans dinner on Nov. 9. An opening ceremony will take place to honor the Veterans in attendance and our country. Students and their families will be able to participate in other activities during the dinner (crafts, card making, etc.).

John Weldon: Veterans who are family members are welcome to join students and staff at John Weldon Elementary for an assembly on Nov. 10, at 9:30 AM. Scouts will present the color guard, recognition for veterans in attendance, JW Choir will sing, and a guest speaker will be present. Guests are welcome to attend a brunch after the assembly in the Learning Commons.

Warren: Warren Elementary will honor veterans with a light breakfast and special presentation put on by students on Nov. 10. Wall of Fame posters and a writing contest will happen during the week. A school-wide fundraiser for Honor Flight will begin on Oct. 30 and run through Nov. 3. Grade level buddies will be creating decorations for the breakfast.

Barnwell: Students learned about Veterans Day and the Honor Flight program during Social Studies classes. Students are welcome to write a thank you letter to the veteran of their choice after donating a dollar or more. On Nov. 10, the Social Studies department will orchestrate a Veterans Day breakfast, open to district area patrons and their student representatives. The Barnwell Band and Choir will perform and students will read poetry related to the service of veterans.

Bryan: Bryan is holding an assembly to honor vets for Veterans Day on Nov. 8, from 9:00-10:30 AM and include a performance by band and choir, a speech from an honorary guest and recognition of the attending veterans and their families. Breeze Park residents are encouraged to attend. After the assembly, refreshments are available for veterans and their families.

Francis Howell Middle School: Penny Wars will begin on Nov. 3 and run through Nov. 10. Francis Howell Middle School will host an assembly on Nov. 1 and a Hats Off to Veterans on Nov. 2. Red, White and Blue Jeans week will begin Nov. 1 and run through Nov. 10.

Hollenbeck: Hollenbeck’s PTO is providing breakfast for veterans from Hollenbeck’s community, beginning at 7:15 AM. A building assembly will begin at 8:30 AM, honoring guests and veterans. Chris Higgins, FOX 2 meteorologist, will be a guest speaker for the assembly.

Saeger: Saeger Middle is hosting brunch for veterans on Nov. 10, from 9:00—10:00 AM. Various presentations by students and staff are being prepared to honor veterans. This year’s guest speaker is Sergeant Stand Wisdom who served in the U.S. Army. Saeger Middle staff and students invite all veterans in the Francis Howell community to attend as they salute their service.  Students are encouraged to invite family members who are Veterans to the brunch.

Francis Howell High School: FHHS continues on their tradition of handing out oversized cards signed by students to veterans on staff. Staff will receive a treat, along with a special commemorative announcement in the morning and patriotic music throughout the day to maintain the celebration. A free lunch will be available to veterans, provided by Sodexo, as a sign of appreciation for their service.

Francis Howell Central High School: Epsilon Beta club leads FHC’s Veterans Day festivities. Students can reach out to Mrs. LaMartina in the Learnings Common if a family member has served in the armed forces. These families and students who are strongly considering joining the military will receive a formal invitation to a Veterans Day breakfast, featuring a performance by FHC Jazz Band and choir. Students will also celebrate with various Spirit days throughout the week, including Superhero Day, Camouflage Day, and Red, White, and Blue Day. Small flags are available for purchase with proceeds going to the Honor Flight Network.

Francis Howell North High School: FHN hosts an all school assembly in the gymnasium. Community veterans are welcome to attend this free event. Festivities began at noon with refreshments and a meet and greet with other veterans. At 1:00 PM a special celebration will begin, featuring music, a guest speaker, and letters.
