Supporting FHSD Families during the Federal Government Shutdown

Due to the continuing shutdown of the federal government, some FHSD families may be facing unanticipated hardships. The District is committed to supporting families affected by the government shutdown. There is nothing more important to us than the continued welfare of our students, so we wanted to take this opportunity to share with you the different ways in which FHSD can help.

Free and Reduced Meal Benefits
During the furlough, households with furloughed employees are encouraged to apply for free and reduced lunch benefits. Usually, income eligibility guidelines for free and reduced-price school meals are based on annual income; in this instance, we can use the adjusted criteria on the application. In FHSD, it is important that all our students have access to nutritious meals. Government employees impacted by the shutdown are encouraged to apply for Free and Reduced Meal Benefits online.

Mobile Market
The FHSD Mobile Market is a partnership with Sodexo and the St. Louis Area Foodbank to provide FHSD families in need with fresh and nutritious food. The Mobile Market is open for food distribution once per month. To sign up to receive donations from the Mobile Market, contact Deanna Kruse at 636-851-4076. Lunch Heroes
The goal of the Lunch Heroes program is to gather donations and work with parents to make sure that all students are able to receive a healthy lunch. The program provides financial support to feed students when they no longer have funds in their lunch accounts. For additional information, please contact Deanna Kruse at 636-851-4076.

Backpack Food Program
Most FHSD elementary and middle schools have a backpack program that provides food for children who don’t have enough to eat at home over the weekend. Every week a backpack is filled with food that is child-friendly, nutritious, nonperishable, and easy to eat. Please contact your child’s school to find out more about the availability of the program.
