FHSD Celebrates Afterschool Professionals Week

As part of Afterschool Professionals Week, April 20 – 24, FHSD would like to celebrate the staff members who provide a safe and engaging place for students before and after school and on non-school days. While Vacation Station is closed for the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to recognize these afterschool leaders and all that they do for our students.

Vacation Station is a space for students to learn and grow when school is not in session, and parents have to work. The staff members plan special activities and events which support learning in an experiential, hands-on way. “These activities are designed to provide experiences that stimulate the child’s physical, social, and emotional development,” shared Susan Lane, who oversees the Vacation Station Program. The students are also making fun memories along the way!

By providing these services at every FHSD elementary school, students have fewer transitions in their day. The staff work with the school to ensure individual student needs are met in a familiar environment.

Marni Morales has been the VS coordinator at Warren Elementary for 15 years. As time has passed, she is now seeing students that attended Vacation Station in elementary school returning to work for her. “Hearing what they remember and the impact our program had for them is the best part of what I do,” shared Morales. “We make memories that last a lifetime.” As we celebrate Afterschool Professionals Week, please join FHSD in thanking our afterschool professionals and their dedication to our students beyond the classroom.
