Occupational Therapists - Making the Impossible, Possible

The month of April is Occupational Therapist Month. The Francis Howell School District has joined together to say thank you to all of the occupational therapists (OTs) employed in the District, by celebrating them during the week of April 6-10. Not only do these individuals support their students, but also parents, teachers, and administrators in making the impossible, possible.

“The school-based OT will work on remediating skill deficits that interfere with performance or work toward adaptive solutions that allow a child to participate in their daily occupations right away,” said Therapeutic Services Coordinator Cathy Fortney. “As a child moves into secondary school, the OT will work collaboratively with the school team to ensure that each student has the skills required to be successful in school occupations. The OT also helps prepare for post-graduation occupations, such as independent living, community engagement, social interaction, or even employment.”

OT is a unique approach that assists individuals to fully engage in any occupation that is part of daily life. The term occupation encompasses any activity that an individual engages in, that has personal meaning. In the school setting, a student’s occupation can include engaging in classroom instruction, self-regulation emotions, effectively interacting with others, completing work, reading, completing self-help tasks, effectively managing school tools, navigating the buildings, and more.

“School-based occupational therapy is important because it helps the educational team develop strategies for struggling students to access their academic and non-academic demands,” said Occupational Therapist Jamie Schonhoff. “Occupational therapy is designed to analyze activities and environments, along with consideration of the students’ specific strengths and struggles to support participation and success at school.”

Please join FHSD in recognizing the amazing assets we have in our OTs, who make the impossible, possible!
