Students all across the country are celebrating the end of the school year with graduation ceremonies, but two students from the Francis Howell School District are walking across the stage twice.

Mya Walker and Briana Graphenreed – both seniors at Francis Howell North - are the first two students in the Early College Program at FHSD to graduate from both college and high school in the same year.

FHSD is proud to partner with St. Charles Community College (SCC) to offer the Early College Program to students at all FHSD high schools.

Through the Early College Program, 11th and 12th grade students can earn up to a full associate degree from St. Charles Community College before graduation, or earn 42 transferrable credit hours. The program allows students to take classes on campus at SCC.

Walker and Graphenreed earned their diplomas in a graduation ceremony held at SCC on May 14.. Exactly three weeks later, on Saturday, June 4, the Francis Howell North class of 2022 will graduate at the Family Arena.

Both students say joining the Early College Program was a great decision. They welcomed the challenge, long hours and dedication required to earn two diplomas.

“It's helped me mature as a person and become more self-driven and self-motivated. I have become much more independent and I am truly prepared for college in a way that I do not think I would have been without this opportunity. I highly encourage other students to do it,” said Walker.

Walker plans to attend Howard University as a “freshman” sociology major, but will start the year taking upper-level classes. She could obtain a bachelor’s degree in less than three years.

Graphenreed will attend Texas Southern University in the fall and plans to finish her bachelor’s degree in finance in two-and-a-half years.

Both of these young ladies say they hope to inspire and encourage other young people to join the Early College Program. Graphenreed exclaimed, “I couldn’t be more proud of myself and this is hands down the best thing I’ve ever accomplished. Never doubt yourself because you can do it.”
