Maintenance and Custodian Appreciation Week - Sept. 28 - Oct. 2

It’s no small task to keep our schools clean and running efficiently. The Francis Howell School District’s custodial staff and maintenance team play a large role behind the scenes to ensure that students and staff are in a safe, clean, and comfortable environment. Grounds workers, maintenance, HVAC technicians, and custodians all keep the District’s facilities looking beautiful and in prime working order. In an effort to help appreciate these individuals, FHSD celebrates Maintenance and Custodian Appreciation Week from Sept. 28 through Oct. 2.

These dedicated individuals are serving FHSD in even more important roles than before, due to the rigorous cleaning protocols the District adopted to help combat the spread of COVID-19. Before the beginning of the 2020-21 school year, custodial staff were hard at work ensuring that classrooms, lunch rooms, hallways, bathrooms, and more were sparkling for returning in-person students. Their continued dedicated support has helped to keep students healthy and ready for learning.

“It is important to take a moment to pause and recognize the courageous men and women who worked hard during the COVID-19 closure and continue to do so, keeping our students and staff safe,” said Director of Facilities and Operations John Klein. “Their efforts day and night keep our buildings functioning and safe.”

With the passage of Proposition S in June, the District has begun the long process of repairing, replacing, and updating the outdated systems that are found in many of our buildings. With 29 separate facilities and over 2.7 million square feet of building space, it’s no small task to ensure that mechanical systems operate as expected, plumbing doesn't leak, and HVAC systems continue to keep students and staff comfortable.

“As we start our journey of completing Prop S work across the District, these individuals will play a key role in the various projects that will make our District facilities better and stronger,” said Klein. “They have a strong commitment and passion for the students and staff of FHSD and we are very fortunate to have such a talented group of individuals on our team.”

The individuals who maintain the school ground manage over 875 acres, 26 athletic fields and playgrounds, and hundreds of native trees, plants, lawns, summer school gardens, and other open spaces. The maintenance of these spaces ensure the safest play and gaming areas for our students, clear walkways during inclement weather, and the beautification of the District as a whole.

Please join us in recognizing these key individuals by encouraging your student to say “thank you” to the custodial and maintenance teams in their buildings.
